Beautiful Budapest

After French class on Friday I headed straight to Charles de Gaulle airport and jumped on my flight to Budapest. I was quite nervous about arriving there alone because of the language barrier, but somehow I managed to exchange some Euros for Hungarian Forint and found my way onto the metro, and then asked some French people if I could look at their map in order to find the hotel.

It wasn't too far and by 7pm I had arrived, where I met up with my friends Michelle and Charlotte. It sounds lame but I immediately realised that this city was completely different to anything I had ever experienced. The strange language and harsh architecture are striking.

The three of us then headed out to dinner at a restaurant under the Vajdahunyad Castle (see what I mean about the language, try and pronounce that).

The food was amazing and so cheap! Michelle and I both had chicken stuffed with roquefort cheese served with mashed potato and cherry ragout. The waiter was also really nice and told us where to go and where not to go (lots of bad men!).

By the time we had finished and I had eaten desert (apple strudel and ice cream) it was quite late and freezing cold so we caught a taxi back to the hotel. Soon after the last member of our party arrived, my friend Belle. We then went to bed in preparation for a massive day of sight-seeing.

Saturday morning we got up, had breakfast at the hotel and headed to 'Buda'. Before arriving I did not actually realise that one side of the Danube river is 'Buda' and the other side is 'Pest'. I'm not entirely sure when the name was formed, as the history is extremely complicated. Anyway we left the hotel and walked down Dohany St, past a beautiful church.

We then came across the Great Synagogue, which is the second largest synagogue in the world after the one in New York. During the war the synagogue marked the border of the Budapest Ghetto. It was absolutely incredible.

After that we continued along to St Stephen's Basilica, another amazing building.

The interior reminded me a lot of the Vatican, and I have to say my favourite part was probably this sign...

We then headed down to the river, past a friendly soldier.

To cross the river we walked over the Széchenyi Chain Bridge. When it was built in 1849, the bridge's centre span was the largest in the world.

Finally we had arrived in Buda and took the funicular up to the castle.

The view from the top was beautiful and we could see the enormous parliament building.

We then walked over to the castle for coffee, but decided not to go through the whole inside as it was actually an art gallery.

By this time our stomachs were rumbling so we headed to a cute restaurant for a traditional lunch. We had goulash soup, followed by paprika chicken with Hungarian dumplings and finally a coffee flavoured cake for dessert. Yum. We then caught the metro back down to Pest and walked up Andrássy Avenue, one of the main streets in Budapest.

It was here that we stumbled on a 'fake' Moulin Rouge. Strange.

Our next stop was the House of Terror, an exhibition located at the former headquarters of the Arrow Cross and other dictatorial regimes that gripped Hungary. This was probably one of the highlights of the trip and there is no way I can do it justice in words. I learnt so much and we ended up staying until it closed. You even go down into the basement where the torture chambers and execution room have been reconstructed.

It was then time to head back to the hotel before dinner, and we picked up some Hungarian champagne on the way to lighten the mood. For dinner we went to a delicious restaurant called Fresco, where I had honey ginger chicken and noodles. We had planned to go out, but by the time we finished dinner it was after midnight so we decided to go home to bed after our huge day out!

Sunday morning we woke up, ate brekkie at the hotel and headed to the Széchenyi thermal baths. It was really nice to relax and float around in the giant spa.

After the baths we wandered through Heroes' Square.

For lunch we headed to the shopping district, however we were all feeling a little bit funny from the heavy Hungarian food so we all chose to stick to salads. There was then time for a little peek in Zara before heading back to the hotel to get ready for the opera!

After getting all dressed up we walked to the New York Palace, a luxury hotel, which has a famous cafe where intellectuals and journalists used to meet and debate. We each had a cocktail and shared some Hungarian salami in the stunning surroundings. The pina colada I had was so good!

After that we caught a taxi and headed to the Opera House to see 'Norma'. The Opera House itself was beautiful, and I enjoyed watching everyone come in all dressed up, however the opera itself just wasn't my thing. I don't particularly enjoy watching them sing at absurdly high pitches, in Italian, with Hungarian subtitles. The ballet is definitely more my scene.

After the opera we went and had pizza for dinner, before heading home for bed.

The following morning we all ate breakfast and then I headed back to the airport and caught my flight back to Paris. This has been one of the most interesting weekends yet; I would definitely recommend going to Budapest!!!

X-Ray, Pique Nique et Cidre Sur la Seine

Hello! Sorry for the lack of posting but this has been a very busy week!

On Monday I had to go to the French visa department for a medical exam to get my official 'Carte de Sejour', which is the permit I need to live here legally. It was a highly irritating procedure. Firstly it takes two and a half hours, and secondly they treat you like an animal.

Basically I arrived, joined the queue of about 50 students/illegal aliens and we were herded into one room to get weighed/have our height checked, and then they made us take an eye test. I must need an update in my prescription because I kept getting the letters wrong and the doctor was like, uhhh, try again. I don't really see why sight is a criteria for being allowed to stay in France... We were then shuffled into a private room and told to strip so they could take an X-ray of our chest. NO WORRIES guys, I DON'T HAVE TUBERCULOSIS. And even if I did I could have infected half of France by now.

After that we had to wait in another queue to have our blood pressure taken before FINALLY getting a visa. Hallelujah.

On Tuesday I woke up and it was a beautiful sunny day, but I unfortunately had class followed by a fair amount of work. Luckily in the evening I took a break, wandered around without my coat (woooo) and went to meet my friend Jenna for dinner.

After dinner we went to see Black Swan, which was half crazy/half brilliant. Natalie Portman is incredible, and I loved all the dancing. However the blood thing was just creepy.

Wednesday was even more beautiful weather (20 degrees!!) and we decided to have a pique-nique in front of the Eiffel Tower. We stocked up on madeleines (little cakes), wine, cheese and baguette and soaked up the sun!

Thursday I had an 8am lecture and then spent the rest of the morning in the library, followed by a long lunch at a student foyer near my apartment. We all had pizza and dessert for 3 euro, score!

In the evening I had class from 7:15-9:15, and then went to meet everyone at The Galway, an Irish pub on the Seine to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. It was absolutely packed! I had cidre (cider thanks, no beer for me) and all the drinks were dyed green.

It was so busy that everyone ended up crowding the footpath outside, literally right on the river, which was beautiful.

So now it's Friday morning and I'm off to French class and then Budapest!!! I'll be back on Monday night, so expect an update on Tuesday!

Sensation White: Hasselt

Thursday and Friday I pretty much had class as normal, and on Friday night I went to Chinatown for dinner again with a bunch of Aussies. I had organised for everyone to then go and see Black Swan, but the size of the group meant that by the time I herded everyone to the cinema we had missed the movie. Oh well, next time.

Then on Saturday morning I got all dressed up in white clothes and set off to my friend Tal's apartment to get ready for Sensation White! Sensation White is basically a rave, a massive dance party in a stadium and everyone who goes has to wear white.

We got on a bus in Paris at 4pm, arrived at the stadium in Hasselt, Belgium at 9pm and danced until 6am! It is quite incredible to be surrounded by 30,000 people, all dressed in white and going absolutely crazy!!

This is Mr. White, one of the DJ's who plays at every sensation...

I also met up with some more friends who had already caught the train there.

I don't think I've ever partied quite so hard, and I had a lot of fun, but I do have to say that it was disappointing that I was probably about one of five people in the whole stadium not on drugs. And I don't think that's an exaggeration.

At 6:30am we all got back on the bus and came home to Paris to crash. A very strange weekend indeed.

Paris Fashion Week

Wednesday I woke up nice and early to rush to my 8am lecture, only to have the lecturer not show up! I was very angry, but managed to get some work done in time to go and stalk the final day of Paris Fashion Week!

The designers are currently showing their prêt-à-porter collections and there are stars to be spotted at every corner! Lucie and I put on our heels and went to stand outside the Miu Miu show. As much as it looks incredible, I feel like it must be tiring always having to worry about what you're wearing. By the time we got there the paparazzi were already lying in wait...

Some of the outfits were amazing, and some were just downright ugly...

After they all went in we waited until the show ended and everyone came out, which was when we saw some 'properly' famous people.

Firstly there was Grace Coddington, the creative director of American Vogue (maybe her hair inspired Julia?)

Then Anna Dello Russo, editor of Vogue Japan (in the blue)

And Mila Kunis, of Black Swan fame, who is absolutely stunning!

I also saw Jackie Frank, editor of Marie Claire Australia, and was going to say hello, but she was whisked off to be interviewed (and I was also kinda scared). She's the one in the glasses.

We also saw one of the models come out, but she appeared very drunk, and was walking around spilling a plastic cup of champagne. Strange.

All in all a successful stalking episode, and I will admit I went shopping on the way home. Just not at Miu Miu.
